Colonel Barry Melton
commands one of the eight geographic regions of the Civil Air Patrol. As Region Commander he is the senior officer responsible for the successful execution of CAP national strategy, policies, missions and objectives within the Southeast Region. He also serves on the CAP Senior Advisory Group and the CAP Command Council. Through his leadership he enables over eight thousand volunteer professionals in six wings to successfully serve the nation and the citizens of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Prior to assignment as a Region Commander in June 2015, he served as a Southeast Region Vice Commander, National Board member and the Tennessee Wing Commander. While serving as the Tennessee Wing Commander, the Wing received a "Highly Successful” rating on their 2009 CAP-USAF Compliance Inspection.
Col. Melton joined CAP in 1986 as a charter member of the Cleveland, Tennessee Composite Squadron. He has held key leadership roles at the Squadron, Group and Wing level. He has served as a Squadron Commander, Group Commander and Vice Wing Commander. In addition, he has been an instructor for the Southeast Region Staff College, numerous Squadron Leadership Schools and Corporate Learning Courses. On the national level, he has assisted the Communications Curriculum Committee with producing online radio communications training known as "ICUT.”
He holds a master rating in three CAP specialties—command, communications, and public affairs, a senior rating in two specialties—administration and personnel, and a technician rating in safety. He is also qualified as a Level III Incident Commander.
His CAP awards and decorations includes the Distinguished Service Award, three Exceptional Service Awards, two Meritorious Service Awards, 11 Commander’s Commendation Awards, two Outstanding Unit Awards, the Gill Robb Wilson Award and numerous other CAP service awards. He has also earned CAP Mission Observer Wings, Master Communicator’s Badge and the Command Senior Advisory Group Badge.
Col. Melton is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Recording Industry Management. He also holds a master’s degree in Television Production and Programming and Media Management from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va. He has completed CAP’s Southeast Region Staff College, National Staff College, the CAP Region/Wing Commanders Course and the National Inspectors General College.
Col. Melton is employed by Life Care Centers of America, where he serves as the director of Virtual Tour Development. He also teaches part-time at two universities in the Southeast Tennessee area.
